For the first time in eight years, Google has modified the Chrome logo
Windows 10 and Windows 11 version has a more consistent gradient to match the style of other Windows icons
Google changed the Chrome logo for the first time since 2014. Elvin Ho, Google Chrome designer, gives an initial look at the logo redesign in a thread across Twitter, as well as some ideas behind the very subtle changes.
Instead of blending shades on the borders of each color, the red, yellow, and green colors became flat. The company has opted for a flat design that goes with its other products.
Although the designer did not mention this change, the blue circle in the middle appears larger. And the colors in the logo look more vibrant (because the design team got rid of the shadows).
The company changed the proportions of the icon while lightening the individual colors that makeup it. And the design team at Google discovered that placing certain shades of green and red next to each other leads to annoying chromatic vibration.
To fix this and make the icon more usable, they decided to use subtle gradients to the green and red parts of the icon to prevent any color flickering.
The main Chrome logo (the one you click from the Dock or taskbar to access the web) won't appear the same across all systems either.
Google has made a simpler icon for Chrome
The ChromeOS logo looks more colorful to complement the other system icons. While the logo has a small shadow in macOS, which makes it appear as if it's popping out of the Dock, the icon looks like 3D.
Meanwhile, Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions have a more consistent gradient to match the style of other Windows icons.
He says you start seeing the new icon now if you're using Chrome Canary (the developer version of Chrome). But it starts rolling out to everyone else over the next few months.
There are also some new icons for beta and developer versions of the Chrome logo. The most exciting change is the outline-style icon of the iOS beta app.
He also notes that the design team experimented with a white line that serves as a border between each color. But it was found that this made the overall icon smaller, making it difficult to identify it among apps other googles.
The Chrome logo has gradually become simpler from 2008 until now. And what started as a shiny three-dimensional logo has turned into a two-dimensional icon of modernity.
